Malaysia’s biggest music artiste, Yuna is back for a special showcase at Publika on April 30th,2013.

The showcase titled “#MHmoments with Yuna brought to you by Malaysia Airlines”, will also be the platform where  the national carrier will be announcing Yuna as Malaysia Airlines’ Social Media Ambassador.

Yuna’s meteoric rise to superstardom has been the stuff of legends, and from her humble days of walking away with a Best Pop Act award at VIMA 2008 to being signed to David Foster’s Verve label in US,  she has been chalking up achievements and accolades that have gone far beyond the usual corridors of the local music scene.

Her ambassadorship with Malaysian Airlines seems a perfect fit as she continues to grow her career on a global level that has also seen her collaborate with Grammy winner Pharell and singing the latest theme song of the Dreamworks animated feature, Croods.

The showcase will also feature opening performances by recent VIMA-Sony Song of The Year recipient, Bihzhu as well as AIM award winner Salam Musik.

There will also be a prize-giving ceremony for Malaysia Airlines’ ‘Round the World’ social media challenge on Facebook which offers a total of 7.5 million Enrich points, as well as two other social media initiatives which will be shared during this occasion.

They came, they sang, they conquered!!

That should just about sum up a portion of the sheer madness and mayhem that VIMA churns out every year, but it was taken to a whole new level this time round.

11 performers who were chosen from a public polls of 200 bands, took to the stage representing all genres, lit up the stage with some electrifying and superlatives defying performances that kept the audiences on an adrenaline high throughout the night. One by one they took to the stage, raising the gear every breathless level to the audiences sheer delight.

From the rousing pre-awards show acoustic delivery of Melinda Wong and Sho’s unbelievable beatboxing skills to the pure raw stage energy of Alex Subryn, Illaiya Hustlaz and Rhythm Nation, it was an incredible night of headbanging, fist thumping and booty shaking. The Best Live Act award of the night finally went to Rhythm Nation, chosen by Traxx FM Upstage founder, Alvin Sinclair.

The awards party in the sky was set against the skyline of Kuala Lumpur, 30 floors up at The View G Tower. It was quite a unique sight for guests to watch performances while the transparent glass behind them bore a panoramic aerial view of the city, and at one point, while it drizzled, the whole venue was embraced by beautiful falling raindrops on the glass all around the stage area.

Yet, it took nothing away from the ultimate winners of the night, where Masia One from Singapore and Homogenic from Indonesia walked away with 3 Golds each in their respective genres. There were surprise wins for Have a Safe Fall from Brunei when they beat the heavyweights in the Best Pop Song category, and Hevance from Sarawak, who bagged Best Rock Act category.

But the biggest win of the night went to Bihzhu, for her breezy  “Heart Way”, taking the Sony Song Of The Year award which translates into a 1 song deal with Sony Music Malaysia. Sony Music will also be working with VIMA to market and promote a special VIMA music awards compilations CD that will feature 18 of the best Malaysian VIMA tracks.

The awards night even had time to include 3 video segments.

The first was a special video segment during the Best Overall Female category award presentation of the premiere of De Lena’s Fashion Jewellery(Croatia) In Asia. The Top 6 winners were all presented special lace tattoos , under the Almissa Collection as part of their recognition. The Top 6 winners were also rewarded with more unique jewellery courtesy of Styles of Sonia and the main winner of the category, Amirah Ali, walked away with the VIMA crystal award.

There was a second video segment, under the Best Digital Tech Breakthrough Album. The Galaxtar Award is now an official award that will be given away annually to musicians who used breakthrough technology in producing or marketing their releases. Bunkface’s “Bunk Not Dead” album was chosen as the first recipient of this award for their Augmented Reality Album which was the first of its kind in Asia.

The third video segment was perhaps the most anticipated of the night.The VIMA Hall Of Fame. The inductees for the VIMA HALL OF FAME 2013 were Azmyl Yunor, Jeff Siah, Paul Ponnudorai (posthumous), Alda Evan Tan and Poetic Ammo.

Karyawan President, Datuk Freddie Fernandez braved through a sea of guests to make it on stage to present the award to Positive Tone founder, Jeff Siah. Rusell Curtis represented the family of Paul Ponnudorai, Alda’s parents and close friends paid tribute to the late bassist and Azmyl Yunor triumphantly lofted his crystal award high above his head to finally receive his due recognition.

However, the night and main segment belonged to the long awaited return on stage for the 4 game-changers, Poetic Ammo (Point Blanc, Land Slyde, Yogi B and C Loco). All 4 members received their crystal award courtesy of Melaka Wonderland Theme Park & Resorts.There were plenty of shout-outs from the screaming crowd for a reunion of the hip-hop legends and also for the members to perform on stage.

The bands graceful melodies and Emir’s unique vocals that echo similar shades to a Radiohead-Travis hybrid, stood out amongst the nominees of the category. In 2nd place was a former VIMA award winner, the Malaysian based, Nigerian hip-hopper, Young Stunna. 3rd place went to Shaneil Devaser of Malaysia.

When I discovered Hiphop as an 8 year old kid in Singapore, I never knew I would one day pursue a life through music, let alone work with my musical heroes like Pharrell, The Game and Grammy winning producer Che Vicious (Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, 50 Cent, Kanye West).  Winning the award for best collaboration means so much.  It embodies not only cultures and musical genres colliding, but it represents a dream fulfilled for me.  

To receive it from a South East Asian based awards is a blessing as I begin my journey now to take all that I have learned from my life in the West and return to my roots in the East, spreading a universal message of independence, freedom and creativity.  I hope through my example as an artist, ERRRYBODY can feel brave to pursue a dream no matter how unlikely or absurd.  This award truly illustrates that in life, anything is possible.  Like the song says… Represent where you come from, Bang pon the system – make enough noise and the world will hear you!

Wilayah Launch at No Black Tie

One of the hardest gigging Malaysian indie/underground musicians of his generation, AzmylYunor burst into the scene with the release of his 2005 folk-country tinged EP “Tenets” after almost a decade of releasing self-produced lo-fi cassette albums in the underground music scene. A former street musician, he has performed at festivals and venues in countries around the region and internationally. Its been a long time coming, but Azmyl will deservedly be inducted into the VIMA HALL of FAME (Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore & Brunei) alongside Malaysian blues legend Paul Ponnudorai (posthumous) amongst others. He was also awarded the ‘Balls of Steel 2013’ award (a.k.a. ‘Men of the Year’) by Clive magazine as one of the ‘few beacons of hope in the Malaysian music scene’.

Azmyl will receive his honour on February 24th, 2013 at the VIMA MUSIC AWARDS NIGHT at The View, G Tower.

He is considered one of the pioneers of the now popular indie acoustic music scene (which now boasts acts like LiyanaFizi and Yuna), promoting the genre as co-artistic director of Troubadours Enterprise (along with fellow singer-songwriters Jerome Kugan and Tan SeiHon), organisers of the annual Malaysian singer-songwriter showcase KL Sing Song from 2005 to 2009.

After touring independently locally and internationally in 2010 and 2011 (he is the first Malaysian indie folk artist to appear on Indonesian national television station TransTV in January 2011) to promote his 2010 album “Warga”, he released his new album “Wilayah” with his touring band The Sigarettes in March 2012. The Sigarettes full line-up in 2012 comprises of drummer Raje, bassist Adrian Yap, guitarist Keng, keyboardist The Alia and saxophonist Yong Yandsen.

He is also an active band member of seminal noise rock band The Maharajah Commission (who completed a nation-wide tour with American band Gangly Youth in November 2012 to support a split vinyl EP), notorious punk band Ben’s Bitches (who are recording their new album for a 2013 release) and arty no-wave fire-breathing trio Ciplak.
